Master Weavers – Although all antique rugs hold their own unique charm and patina, some are revered as the crème de la crème because of their quality and provenance. These pieces are often woven by master weavers that are respected and known for their weaves both in quality and design. Very few rugs would be considered masterpieces but the below selection were all made by the best of the best!
The more familiar master weavers such as Mohtashem, Haji Jalili, and Kermani created some of the finest quality antique rugs to ever come out of Persia. Other rugs are known not for the weaver that created them, but the company that commissioned their construction. One such example is that of Ziegler and Co., a company that commissioned high quality rugs from the Arak region of Iran to be made for Western tastes. These pieces are prized for their decorative design and colors that veered away from the traditional Persian compositions.
Aboul Ghasem Kermani
Ustadan Kermani is perhaps the most famous weaver from Kerman and is known for the quality and design of his rugs.
Haji Jalili (Tabriz)
Master weaver Haji Jalili (aka Hajijallili or Hajalili) is best known for his 20th century use of mixing lighter colors of pinks, gold and greys.
Ustadan (or Master Weaver) Mohtashem is considered to be the “best” weaver in the history of Kashan. His rugs are works of are and some of the finest antique carpets to ever have been woven
These incredible rugs were produced in the Persian city Sultanabad (which is known today as Arak) during the last part of the 19th century with the European and Western markets in mind.
