Italian Rugs and Tapestries – Peasants primarily produced the Antique Italian rugs that exist independently from Eastern influences and remained in southern Italy and Sardinia. The Tappeti Abruzzesi were not real floor coverings but instead used as table and bed coverings. Designs are mainly heraldic and Catholic with the used of two-headed eagles and religious symbols. Italian rug designs emphasize zigzag lines along with the star motif. Sellers also popularized antique tapestry rugs throughout continental Europe.
