Marbediah Rug, Country of Origin: Israel, Circa Date: 1920’s – This dazzling emperor’s-style carpet is alive with artistic influences from Europe, the Mediterranean and the Mid East, which all had a powerful effect on Israel’s artistic community. The lush mulberry and aubergine field and complementary borders are filled with elaborate Persianate arabesques that have a chic European-influenced complexion. Graceful mandalas and ogival medallions are linked together in a kaleidoscopic pattern that recedes into the corners and extends beyond the edges of the field. Delicate flower-laden vines fill the ornamental medallions and surround the headstrong animals and demure deer that populate the forested field. Detail-rich floral ornaments appear again in the complementary borders, which feature reciprocating coves and open-ended cartouches filled with scrolling vines. Beautifully colored accents in soft green, cerise, ivory and powdery blue add to the unique appearance of this antique Israeli rug from the famed Marbediah workshop.
