Antique Metallic and Silk Indian Textile, India, circa Nineteenth Century – Here is a truly exceptional antique textile – an antique metallic and silk textile that was woven in India during the nineteenth century. Possessed by an ephemeral beauty, this impressive textile shimmers throughout its lovely composition of gracefully drawn floral elements. A simple composition, this antique Indian textile consists simply of a subtly decorated and narrow border of gold, and a long and narrow field. The gold on gold detailing in the border is sufficiently low-contrast as so the border itself superficially appears to consist of a solid band gold. Within the field, however, a wide range of contrasting colors may be found. Here, fair shades of purple are swirled together with oranges, yellows, blues and whites in a vivacious floral pattern. Throughout the field, winding vine scrolls of various lengths unfold in an exciting and unpredictable pattern, blossoming into sumptuous floral details at every turn. A delightful antique textile, this metallic and silk piece from nineteenth century India is a truly moving and exciting example.
