Obscure midnight blue borders decorated with serrated palmettes, detailed animals, reposed mystics and angelic winged figures continue the sophisticated pairing of saffron yellow and inky blue that colors the field. Based on the hunting scene rugs and designs that we first see in the early Persian rugs, this antique silk and wool rug from India is beautiful later example of the iconic design. During the 16th century, Shah Abbas made an effort to elevate the Persian arts and society. This was known as the “Golden Age of Persian Weaving.” It was during this time that formal schools were established to create area rugs and carpets for the Royal Courts and public spaces. This elevation of the arts also included calligraphy, bookbinding, and mosaic work, which influenced the rug designs of the time.
