Vintage French Art Deco Rug, Country Of Origin: France, Circa Date: First Half of the Twentieth Century (Around 1920) – A hugely important international art movement, the Art Deco movement of the 1920’s and 1930’s saw a tremendous shift in the prevailing aesthetic sensibilities of the time. Emphasizing geometry and a sort of re-imagined classicism, the Art Deco movement had a profound impact on the design and art world. This vintage rug which features an Art Deco design treads the line between decorative abstraction and representation. Many of the forms in the field of this French Deco carpet seem to depict landscape elements- mountains, rivers, sun and clouds- but it is difficult to be sure. It all works just as well as free-form design or pattern, carefully coordinated with effective color contrasts and juxtapositions. The border of arches and volutes works similarly, as pattern or as a stylized rendering of architectural form. Though rendered in the medium of decorative textile, this piece is nonetheless a first-rate modern painting.
