Small Antique Oriental Khotan Carpet, Country of Origin: East Turkestan, Circa Date: 1900 – This antique Khotan carpet was made circa 1900 and originates from East Turkestan. The design itself features concentric rectangles of many different styles, which beautifully showcase the overall shape of the Oriental rug.

The outermost border of the small antique Oriental Khotan carpet features floral-inspired patterns in warm tones on a field of neutral ivory, with darker lines weaving between the flowers. These flowing lines guide the eye along the edge of the small size rug in such a way that it helps to elongate the rectangular shape along the long edges. On the outside and inside of this floral border there are bands of more solid color, giving another layer that makes this antique rug appear dynamic.

Within that layer, there is another layer that involves many different colors in a geometric and line-inspired design. These colors are bold and vibrant and add a layer of depth to the rug, making this layer stand out. The innermost rectangle features three floral-inspired medallions in similar colors to the outer layers that really bring the piece together and draw your eye toward the center of the tribal rug. These floral medallions sit on a field of diagonal fretwork or basketry design in darker colors, making them stand out among the darker background.

The design of this rug is simple yet complex, combining complicated elements among a relatively simple concentric rectangular design. This makes the design seem elegant yet not over complicated in a way that showcases the history of this gorgeous rug. This antique design is lovely and it’s easy to see why many are drawn to the colors and designs of these beautiful antique rugs.
