Antique Caucasian Soumak Rug 50006

Size: 4 ft x 8 ft 5 in (1.22 m x 2.57 m)

Antique Soumak Rug, Country of Origin: Caucasus, Circa Date: 1900 — Vivid blue and red colors in this plush area rug contrast in a striking manner. The Soumak Rug displays two different ornate irregularly shaped oval medallions, each containing ornate brown, red, black and white colors. Half the field remains light blue; half maintains a darker shade of blue. The black border displays a series of distinctive geometric shapes inside red blossoms. Nearly identical blue and red narrow guard borders outline the black border of the rug, perhaps indicating an abrash feature. Soumak Rugs are woven in a way that allows them to lie flat; the usually possess greater strength and thickness than Kilim Rugs, but they are more delicate than many other types of Oriental rugs as a result of the flat weave.
