Antique Caucasian Soumak Rug, Origin: The Caucasus, Circa: First Quarter of the Twentieth Century – Here is a truly exciting antique Oriental rug – an antique Soumak carpet that was woven in the Caucasus during the early decades of the twentieth century. Richly decorated and highly traditional, this antique Soumak carpet boasts a long and narrow format that is accentuated and enhanced by its stacked medallion composition. Generally speaking, antique Caucasian rugs and carpets are celebrated for their unique and deeply authentic tribal aesthetic. A traditional border surrounds the piece, with blue figures set against ivory that give the impression of ocean waves. Within, a secondary border appears, this one a deep red orange shade and decorated occasionally with small floral details. Within this border stands the series of five stacked medallions, each in a square all its own. Each medallion consists of a central enthusiastic floral element; a series of small details that surround it; and then a pair of highly tribal and jagged outlines. The octagonal shape that these outlines form allow for the presence of small corner pieces in each square, within each additional details appear. Despite these similarities, each medallion is unique from the rest.
