Antique Caucasian Seychour Rug 50012

Size: 3 ft 8 in x 5 ft 5 in (1.12 m x 1.65 m)

Antique Seychour Rug, Caucasus, 1900 — A motif of alternating rows of two and three Gol medallions on a dark blue field offers this antique rug a striking character. The medallions grouped in pairs appear to be mirror images of one another. All the medallions possess jagged or crenelated edges. Colors include rich shades of brown and beige, red, blue, white and gray. The ovals reflect floral themes, while the diamonds contain intricate geometric patterns. A narrow red guard border, interrupted at intervals by sections of medallions, surrounds the field with a scrolling motif of white blossoms and ruyi symbols. The blue and white border continues this theme. A lack of symmetry in the border appears in slightly varying colors and shapes along opposite sides and in the dissimilar upper corners. The people who made Seychour Rugs came from the Northeast Caucasus Mountains, where they have established a weaving tradition that goes back centuries.
