Antique Caucasian Bordjalou Kazak Rug, Origin: Caucasus, Circa: Late 19th Century – Here is a dynamic and exciting antique Oriental rug – an antique Kazak Bordjalou rug, woven by the inimitable rug weavers of the Caucasus. This fascinating piece is primarily characterized by its tribal design aesthetics, which are present throughout the entirety of the rug. Boasting what is in fact a relatively straightforward composition, this antique Kazak Bordjalou rug is effectively broken down into a border/field dichotomy, with thinner borders acting effectively as frames for the real action of the piece. Most of that action occurs in the “border” that surrounds the relatively small space of the field, as it is here that we encounter the interlocking, zig-zagging, motley striped pattern that gives this rug so much of its character. Beautiful colors expertly woven together define this space, which is vibrant and complex. Of course, one cannot help but focus one’s attention slightly inward, at the bright red of the relatively small field. Here, stacked geometric figures serve as medallions, framed by smaller tribal details. An expertly crafted tribal composition, this antique rug is an exciting and daring piece.
