Antique American Hooked Rug, Country of Origin: America, Circa Date: Early 20th Century – Rug hooking began as a colonial craft that used scraps of wool punched into a ground cloth to create beautiful designs. These pieces were economical and used what would otherwise be discarded. It was a frugal way to use scraps and provide a warm and durable floor covering. They were also hung on walls to add insulation. The art of rug hooking continued through the early 20th century, and this piece is a beautiful collectible that showcases this traditional art form that represents a piece of American history.

Early pieces of Colonial rug hooking had a primitive quality and represented what came to be known as “naive” art. The shapes were simple, and animal or human figures were often representational, rather than realistic. During the Civil War, the ability to print designs on the background allowed the art to develop into more intricate designs, many of which mimicked the ornate floral patterns found in Victorian French rugs.

During the last decade of the 19th century, the Arts and Crafts movement began to emerge. It represented a transition away from items that looked mass-produced towards ones that looked handcrafted. Pieces created during this piece were made to look as if they were made by primitive artists from earlier times. It was thought that these pieces gave the home a more comfortable and inviting feel.

The horses in this gorgeous, neutral piece of rug hooking reflect the aesthetics of a simpler time and place, making it fit into the Arts and Crafts movement ideals. Once again, designers are moving away from pieces that look mass manufactured in favor of pieces that have a hand-crafted look. This piece has a folk art feel that will add charm and is a perfect size for framing. Not to mention, it is a delightful piece for the horse lover in the family.
