Highly tribal and representative of the culture responsible for its creation, this antique carpet is a unique and exciting example. Born out of semi-nomadic tribal traditions, this exquisite antique Afghan torba is a relic of a different culture and way of life. This archetypal torba features a classic kejebe design recognized by the central lozenge compartments and angular arches that line the edges of the field. Bold contrasting outlines highlight the minuscule symbolic decorations and scrolling ram’s horns that cut into the neighboring designs. Like some Turkmen rugs and main carpets, the composition of this classic torba features multiple sets of primary, secondary and tertiary borders that showcase the weaver’s creativity and contain some of the most remarkable and original designs in the composition. Beautifully woven and resplendent with traditional, tribal elements of design, this antique Afghan carpet from the early twentieth century is an intriguing example.
