Vintage Scandinavian Verner Panton “Quadrat” Textile, Country Of Origin: Scandinavia, Circa Date: Mid 20th Century – This gorgeous Verner Panton textile is an iconic pattern that was created in 1969. This pattern is known and the Quadrat (Kvadrat) pattern. It was used in several collections through 1974, including the Mira X ensemble. Panton’s work defined an era. The Panton Era refers to a period in modern design that was dominated by simple forms and vivid, futuristic pieces. It would eventually influence contemporary styles, such as ultra-modern and minimalist.

Panton’s vision for interior design was considered unconventional by his contemporaries. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen and began working for the prestigious Arne Jacobsen architectural firm. It was not long before it became apparent that Panton’s vision was not in alignment with that of his superiors. He left the firm so that his designs and bring them to the world.

This would prove to be a good move, and his pieces are now recognizable as pieces that define midcentury design. This piece demonstrates several characteristics that make them recognizably the work of Panton. First, the piece uses color to create the optical illusion of variations in form. The squares are identical, but the placement of colors makes the lines appear wavy. The squares with lighter orange on the outside appear to be closer to the viewer than ones with the more intense orange on the outside.

In this piece, Panton plays with color saturation to create a three-dimensional effect. Panton’s textiles were created as a part of an ensemble with pieces that were meant to create a certain experience within the room. The room was meant to envelop the occupant in color and shape.

The Quadrat textile series was often paired with the famous Panton chair that first began to appear in 1960 and was made from a single piece of plastic. This is an essential piece for a midcentury collector or for an ultra-modern interior design. It could be used to complete a Panton collection or to serve as an authentic piece for a retro-inspired space.
