This splendid antique Laotian textile features a lavishly decorated composition with colorful patterns that are centered around the benevolent Naga dragon.
Textile, Laos, Early 20th Century – This beautifully proportioned antique Laotian textile features a rich assortment of fruity colors that are paired with ethnic stripes and a beautifully decorated Naga dragon. The crisp white and red colors featured within the undulating Naga figure emphasize the scaly texture of the serpent’s skin and highlight the latch-hook appendages that radiate from the body. The center of the field is controlled by a triumvirate of fuchsia and burgundy pillars that feature a series of repeating symbols decorated with ram’s horn extensions, which are adorned with a rich variety of complementary colors. Intricate striped columns embellished with minute repeating patterns create exquisite dividers that embody the graphic style of Laos.
