Small Scatter Size Antique Turkish Ghiordes Rug, Country Of Origin: Turkey, Circa Date: 1900 – This antique Oriental rug, is a happy and charming Turkish Ghiordes rug. This small size scatter rug  is dominated by intricately woven design elements in autumn hues on a pale golden rug background. The asymmetrical simple yet tribal medallion design of this beautiful antique Turkish Ghiordes rug, features floral accents, geometric shapes and a pattern that is light enough to fit in with many different types of interior decor.

Unlike the flat weave rug style, patterns made in knotted-pile require additional colors to be added using a complex series of knots. A Ghiordes or Turkish rug knot is create by folding the thread over two strands of the weave and then bringing the ends up through the middle of the two strands. This lends a texture that is much different than a  Tibetan or Persian Senneh rug knot method, and very different from the flat woven Kilim style, where colors are worked into the design during the weaving itself.

The amorphous style of the figures on this decorative rug almost trick the eye. What looks at one moment to be a multi-colored pheasant looks at second glance to be a rock outcropping with a man seated on atop it. Is that design meant to be a bumblebee, or a man on horseback or merely an abstract shape? Or perhaps all are meant to be flowers. The elaborate and perplexing pattern will draw the eye again and again, as the brain tries to work this visual puzzle of a rug.

Though not as complex as many other Turkish rug designs, this antique Turkish Ghiordes rug  design, nevertheless, stands out because of its unconventional approach to the standard medallion style of rug. The tension on the weave is very tight and close and allowed for astonishing illusions of shading and texturing to be created using only a few different colors of thread. This happy little antique rug is truly a remarkable bit of weaving and a work of art.
