A Gorgeous and Unique Large Scale Antique Turkish Oushak Room Size Area Rug, Country of Origin / Rug Type: Antique Turkish Rugs, Circa Date: Early 20th Century – Oushak carpets are known for the luster and vibrancy of their wools. This magnificent example uses fiery red, terracotta, browns, sky blue and ivory to create a carpet that delights the senses. Oushak was established as a center of carpet production in the early days of the Ottoman Empire.
Oushak was one of the larger towns in western Anatolia and is located south of Istanbul. Carpet production in this area is well-documented, and they were popular in Europe for quite some time. They are typically woven with the Ghiordes, or Turkish, knot. They often have long, soft piles.
The carpet centers of Oushak were located in the city, but carpets were also being produced in the smaller rural communities surrounding the larger metropolitan area. Many of the designs were similar, but those produced in the smaller villages have a distinctively different tribal style than those produced in the larger city. They have a rustic, hand-crafted feel that is the perfect touch for a traditional or contemporary room.
The carpets of the villages were often woven on smaller looms, with the portion of completed work rolled onto a bar at the bottom of the loom. The weaver could not see what had been done before. Carpets woven in the formal production houses were carefully laid out using a pattern. They have completed designs that resolve, and they are more precisely executed.
Village rugs may have incomplete design motifs on the ends, and they may have areas where the weaver had to compensate because they were running out of room. You can clearly see these types of design features on this carpet. City rugs are woven from a pattern, but the village rugs are created from the heart and have a special place in rug collections.
This Turkish carpet is beautiful and would make a lovely addition to any room. You can see the love that went into every knot and the traditions learned by committing them to memory. The brilliant colors of the antique rug complement the larger floral motifs, making this the perfect piece for a conversation area. Wherever you decide to place it, this carpet will add a charm all its own.
