Beautiful Large and Extremely Decorative Antique Turkish Oushak Rug, Country of Origin / Rug Type: Turkish rug, Circa 1900 – Some of the first carpets to be seen by Western eyes are believed to have been Oushaks. This gorgeous Oushak is from around the turn of the 20th century and is perfect for both traditional and contemporary room designs.

The first thing that draws attention is the vibrant, lively colors. The brilliant reds and citrusy oranges are fresh and invigorating. These are balanced by earthy browns, soft blues, and ivory. Oushak rugs are known for bringing color into the space, and for their masterful eye for balance within the piece.

Some Oushak rugs have the formality of a city carpet, while others show a more primitive, tribal design. This one shows a certain spontaneity that reflects the choices of the weaver as they knotted the piece. Many of the patterns and motifs found in Oushak rugs have been passed down through oral tradition, giving them a cultural connection to the people and their history.

Oushak is a town that is located in Western Anatolia. The designs were more heavily influenced by Persian designs, but the weavers stylized them to have a more geometric style that you find in traditional Turkish designs. The result is a tribal rug that is perfectly suited to contemporary tastes. This rug is versatile enough to fit into a formal design, or it could be used in a Boho chic design where its tribal character can shine through.
