Elegant Antique Spanish Savonnerie Carpet, Rug Type / Country of Origin: Antique Spanish Rugs, Circa Date: Last Quarter of the 19th CenturySpanish Savonnerie carpets have a timeless elegance that reflects classical themes and time-honored traditions. This magnificent piece was created in the last quarter of the 19th century and has an intricate design that uses an impressive range of colors.

This carpet has a classic Savonnerie design with a central rondel and a field that is filled with intricate vine work and scrolled leaves. The designs of Savonnerie rugs have a distinctively French character, often depicting armorial framed central medallions, as this example shows. They often display a deep blue or brown background that highlights the delicate blues, pinks, yellows, greens, and neutral tones.

The original Savonnerie factory was in operation from 1650-1685, but carpets continued to be produced that were based on the original designs. Even though the factory was no longer in existence, these carpets are still collectively called Savonneries. They were often given as diplomatic gifts.

The original designs remained unchanged until the 18th century when the original cartoons were modified to introduce Rococo elements. This particular carpet was created in Spain. Spanish weavers often followed the major trends in Europe. French Savonneries tended to be more pictorial, and the Spanish ones have more military, architectural, floral, and heraldic themes, such as this one.

This is an elegant antique rug in a classical style, making it the perfect addition to formal interior design. This carpet would be the perfect match for a room with bold, architectural features. It is an elegant rug that is fit for royalty.
