Beautiful and Rare Finely Woven Antique Silk and Metallic Thread Persian Souf Kashan Rug  Country of Origin / Rug Type: Persian Rug Circa: Late 19th Century – This rare silk and metallic thread Souf Kashan from the late 19th century would be the pinnacle of any collection. The rug is a lasting legacy of the Golden Age of Carpet Weaving in the 16th and early 17th centuries. The inspiration for many of these exquisite pieces was the Garden of Paradise. The sheen of the silk threads, accented by metallic highlights, supports the sublime theme of this remarkable piece.

Kashan was once known for creating pieces that were to be used in the palaces and mosques of the Safavid rulers. The skill of the Kashan designers and weavers was renowned for the superb quality and exquisite designs. Many of the carpets were made from wool, and carpets made from silk and metal threads are extremely rare, especially in this level of preservation.

Silk can be spun into extremely fine, strong threads that can be dyed to create colors that have an almost electric glow. Souf carpets have areas of both flat weave and pile weave, showing the exceptional skill of the Kashan weavers. The design is embossed and can be felt with the hand. The designs of Souf carpets are breathtaking, as you can see from this example.

Souf rugs were not necessarily meant to be floor coverings. They were often designed to be hung on the walls of palaces and mosques as art. They are meant to inspire a connection to the divine. This magnificent example has an all over design and an extraordinary range of colors. Although it is an all over design, it has the symmetry and precision that you find in medallion carpets, with one group of motifs placed centrally in the rug.

This antique carpet has vibrant, intense colors that make it stand out as a work of art. It has an exceptionally fine weave, and the pile is cut close to reveal the fine details of the design. This gives it a soft feel and supple handle. The artist used rich brown as the background of the design in a way that is reminiscent of the earth sending forth a brilliant array of heavenly flowers and abundance. This is a significant piece for any collection and would make a beautiful addition to any home or office where its elegance will transform the space into one that is sophisticated and refined.
