The well preserved example of an antique Persian Kerman rug produced towards the end of the Qajar dynasty is a rare and decorative piece. The palatial size of the antique rug suggests that this Persian Kerman did not grace the floors of any ordinary home. These large size and more unusually colored antique rugs were produced and designed to play a supporting role in the interior design of palaces and other large public buildings. The design and scale of the aubergine colored antique Persian Kerman rug was meant to draw attention to the grand scale of the architecture and inspire a sense of awe when one first entered the room.

The Qajar Dynasty holds a special place in Persian / Oriental rug history. Once known as the Sublime State of Persia, the grandeur and elegance of this time is reflected in its artwork. This antique oversized rug is an excellent example of the richness in color and intricacy of design of these magnificent pieces. The bold, contrasting colors are used to create a splendid array of floral elements set against a rich burgundy background.

This beautiful eggplant colored antique Persian Kerman rug features a large scale Shah Abbas pattern yet creates balance through the use of vertical and horizontal symmetry. The symmetry is achieved through the placement of larger floral elements. The main border is set against a midnight blue background that has a similar color value as the background of the main field. This also adds to a sense of balance, it helps to define the area of the rug.

This is a splendid example of one of the fine antique, late 19th century, Persian rugs from Kerman that continued to be produced through the last days of the great Qajar Dynasty. It is in excellent condition for its age and would make a magnificent addition to any collection.
