Made in the village of Sarouk starting in the mid-eighteenth century, the best antique Persian Sarouk rugs were called “Farahan”. This subset grouping of Persian rugs woven in Sarouk, was created due to their exceptional quality. The more limited production of these more stylish and ornate and fine quality area rugs continued for the next century. These single-weft antique rugs boast a wide range of floral and curled foliage designs that were created with higher grade wool and natural rug dyes.

Rumored to have first produced for members of the Persian aristocracy, antique Persian Sarouk Farahan rugs displayed full, vibrant colors complemented and enhanced by subtle, softer shades. They are some of the finest woven area rugs, and their designs and patterns were delicately produced and carefully crafted. These fascinating and more complex Persian carpet designs typically include numerous patterns that mix traditional and tribal motifs.

Beautiful Farahan Sarouk carpets that were produced in and nearby the Arak region in west-central Iran, tend to merge varied elements and sensibilities. Their well-known medallion motif has classical Persian qualities. These acclaimed Persian rug patterns and designs hark back to the well-known angular linear drawing of the antique Persian Heriz and Serapi rugs. However, Farahan Sarouk rug motifs and designs exhibit a far more delicately crafted classical style approach. These exceptional Farahan Sarouk carpets typically have a greater rug knot count than their neighboring Persian Sultanabad carpets for example.

Throughout their entire history, the antique Persian Sarouk Farahan rugs have always been considered to be some of the best kind of area rugs, most captivating and finely woven rugs. To own a true late 19th century Persian Sarouk Farahan rug, is to own a magnificent piece of history and Persian art.
