Antique Persian Mazandaran Kilim, Origin: Persia, Circa: Early 20th Century – This phenomenal antique double-sided kilim illustrates the region’s powerful and original style, which transcends the rugged and remote hills of Mazandaran. The observe side features a delightful collection of black-and-red lumberjack plaid segments that are grouped together in an improvisational manner with charming irregularities and quirky patchwork intersections. This lively collection of hand-woven plaids is enclosed by a narrow kohl black border that completes the edgy rock-and-roll palette of black, red and plaid. The dark reverse side displays an abstract pattern of lateral paint-roller streaks rendered in variable shades of ashen gray and kohl black that have a decidedly modern appearance. This work of inadvertent minimalism has a countrified Warhol-esque appearance that embodies a Western sense of style and a brand of modernism that honors history and builds on rustic traditions.
