Breathtaking Oversized Antique Persian Malayer Rug, Country of Origin / Rug Type: Persian Rug, Circa Date: 1900 – This breathtaking antique Persian Malayer rug was created around the turn of the 20th century. The colors and design come together in a way that makes this spectacular antique Persian rug one of those special finds that one does not come across often. This beautiful rug features an all over design and a garden bursting with plant life in brilliant tones and is framed by a breathtakingly colored soft yellow colored border.

Malayer is one of the larger villages located in the northwestern part of Persia near Hamadan and Sarouk. The antique rugs from Malayer are known for the clarity of their design. This level of clarity can only be achieved by a fine weave and cutting the pile close so that the lines are clear and sharp. Malayer is known for the production of larger size rugs. Typically, these were produced by a family, rather than a single individual. Larger rugs were often woven on commission for wealthier customers. Only a limited number of antique Persian Malayer rugs of this square size were created.

The darker colors of the main background in the field of the antique Oriental rug serve as the perfect backdrop to highlight the range of colors, including light sky blues, rusts, camels and ochre. The border background, in a soft yellow color, juxtaposes beautifully with the field and carries through some of the same floral motifs to give the design unity throughout. Gracefully curved leaves add a delicate touch that creates movement within the design, leading the eye gently from one element of the antique Persian Malayer rug to another.

This is just one of those spectacular antique Oriental rugs where color and design come together to create a breathtaking rug that is special and stands out for its superb artistry and skill. This Persian Malayer carpet would make an excellent addition to a traditional or contemporary design. It would also work exceptionally well in an open plan studio to define a space.
