Learn More About Norwegian Rugs and Artistic Textiles

Norwegian Rugs and Carpets – Rugs from Norway tend to share Eastern influences dating back to the 15th century when the antique Oriental carpets reached the Baltic.

Rya rugs, the common design of rugs from Norway, are similar to the Bessarabian kilim that resulted from flat tapestry carpets brought back from the Goths and Vikings who traded throughout Russia and in Istanbul (located in the modern day country of Turkey).

The designs that we see in the antique rugs and carpets from Norway are typically semi geometrical, floral or plain and are often ornamented with multiple parallel borders.

Many of the older Norwegian rugs also tend to have religious motifs and depict the influence of prevailing European styles. That said, they tend to vary a lot, especially once you include that Norwegian artists that also produced textile art works.
