This lovely antique French art deco rug was created by one of the most influential artists of the early 20th century, Jules Leleu. Some consider Leleu to be the grandfather of the Art Deco movement.
Leleu was primarily known as the sculptor, but he also created designs for carpet maker Ivan Da Silva Bruhns. It was this work that made his designs iconic pieces in Art Deco interior design. This rug is an example of Leleu’s characteristic style that uses geometric shapes, sharp lines, and the tendency to distill shapes to their most basic form, a characteristic that would later become associated with the modern art movements.
