Antique English Rug, Origin: England, Circa: 1900 – Here is a stately and elegant antique carpet – an antique English rug, woven in the United Kingdom around the turn of the twentieth century. While England does not necessarily boast the longest or the most illustrious rug making traditions, there are certainly some notable styles and examples that are in fact distinctly English. This particular example is in fact an excellent manifestation of some of the more desirable trends to have emerged in English weaving. Delicate red fleurons float in staggered rows against a deep salmon ground on this stately antique English carpet. A jewel-like trellis edging makes the transition to the framing border of closely packed roses and stems. The patterned complexity and light palette of the border provides and excellent contrast to the simpler design and richer color of the field in this masterful expression of design counterpoint. A beautiful antique carpet, this English rug from the turn of the twentieth century is a wonderful example.
