Antique English Axminster Rug, Origin Country: England, Circa: Late 19th Century РWhile Axminster carpets generally belong within the European design tradition, like Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets, this extraordinary example fuses such feels with designs that we more closely associate with either Persian carpets or Turkish rugs. The oval medallions are Western or European, as is the coloration of soft reds and black on dominant tans. But the intervening violincellos are reminiscent of Sultanabad carpets from Iran. The design of the border is also purely Persian Рan adaptation of the mahi fish design pattern Рalthough the entire composition hangs together with a remarkable decorative unity, suggesting that East and West are not so far apart after all.

At fist glance, this Axminster looks like the great and decorative Oushak rugs. This is mostly due to the larger scale pattern, soft coloration and plush pile. This magnificent and unusual antique rug is also reminiscent of the iconic arts and crafts design rugs which is also a departure from what we are used to seeing in these iconic English rugs.

Needless to say, this was more than likely a custom made area rug back in the day. It is so out of the box and unusual that it makes it obvious that someone wanted this specific rug made just for them. If you are looking for a unique rug, that bridges the divide between the Oriental and European approach to design and texture, this antique English Axminster rug would make a breathtaking option. This area rug could be placed in a range of interior designs and would make any room far more interesting and cozy. Regardless of how you decide to use it or which room you intend of showcasing it in, this is one spectacular Axminster that is sure to bring many years of joy and appreciation to anyone who lucky enough to own it.
