Small Scatter Size Tribal Design Antique Bakshaish Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Late 19th Century – This antique Bakshaish rug is a brilliant example of northwest Persia’s colorful and culturally rich weaving traditions. The well-appointed midnight blue field features an architectural medallion with strapwork accents and decorative finials. Endless knots with infinitesimal outlines adorn the coffered medallion along with auspicious eight-pointed stars, eye motifs that double as flowers and recurving ram’s horns that form delicate tulip leaves. The intensely decorative field is enclosed by high-impact main borders and secondary guardbands that display compound botanical motifs, star-shaped flowers and polychrome Herati leaves. These cleverly disguised symbols masquerade as decorative flowers and stylized leaves that emphasize the heritage of Bakshaish weavers.
