Antique Khotan Oriental Rug, late nineteenth century – This lovely antique Oriental rug — an antique Khotan from East Turkestan made sometime toward the end of the nineteenth century — is a brilliant example of the rug making tradition to which it owes its genesis. This luxuriant antique Khotan is the epitome of classic Oriental elegance and style, representing many of the characteristics that are most sought after by designers, collectors and experts. Its warm salmon field is filled by a gorgeous central star medallion with smaller openwork medallions above and below, along with a few precise geometric fillers. The whole composition is enclosed by two elegant borders, one featuring a beautiful cloud design and the other done with diagonal fretwork, the primarily golden tone of which nicely frames and contrasts with the field. A beautifully orchestrated piece, this rug is a paragon of quality Oriental rug making.
