These graphic motifs that symbolize power and other auspicious traits create a dominant theme across the central medallion of this traditional Kazak carpet from the Caucasus. Wide red borders decorated with symbolic bereket motifs surround the irregular field, which features recessed niches framed by running water borders. Secondary borders featuring a bold harlequin pattern with colorful lozenge symbols represent the antidote to the evil eye. The colorful borders and mossy green field of this antique carpet woven during the turn of the century are decorated with a multitude of symbolic Kazak motifs that have been used in the Caucasus for thousands of years.
