Chinese Rug, China, Circa 1900 – Designed as luxury trade goods and displayed for show, saddle carpets were traditional symbols of wealth and status in Chinese and Tibetan cultures. Only the finest saddle carpets were woven in two pieces and joined together in the center with impeccable precision. Originally designed to protect the horse and rider from the hard saddle, thick-pile saddle carpets became status symbols intended for public display. With protection medallions, lotus-flower borders, and a number of shou symbols surrounding the delicate latticework field, this saddle carpet is a classic example of Chinese design.
