Vintage Scandinavian Carpet by Marta Maas Fjetterstrom, Sweden, circa Mid-Twentieth Century – Here is a dynamic and deeply alluring vintage carpet – a vintage Swedish rug that was woven in Scandinavia during the middle decades of the twentieth century with a design by the celebrated Scandinavian visionary Marta Maas Fjetterstrom. Easily the most important and widely admired of all mid-century Scandinavian rug and carpet designers, Marta Maas is largely responsible for the tremendous renaissance that occurred in Sweden during the mid-twentieth century. This particular vintage Swedish rug beautifully showcases some of the finer points of Marta Maas’s immediately recognizable style, as well as some of the more important developments in mid-century Scandinavian rug design. For instance, the way that the carpet is broken up into field and border portions is a nod to traditional, classically composed rugs. Indeed, even the detail work, which resembles rectilinear, geometric flowers, is common in classic Oriental rugs; what Marta Maas has done here is to re-appropriate this traditional design into something unique. The pastels that color the carpet throughout make it deeply evocative of the spring and other vernal ideals. A beautifully composed vintage carpet, this Scandinavian rug by Marta Maas Fjetterstrom is a stunning and exciting example of an important weaving style.
