This dynamic, energetic Mid-Century Swedish rug was designed by Barbro Nilsson for the famed atelier of the inimitable Marta Maas Fjetterstrom. Autumn colors and abstraction delight.

Vintage Swedish Carpet, Origin: Sweden, Circa: Mid-20th Century – Here is a beautiful vintage rug – a mid-century Scandinavian composition, woven by the perennially popular rug-makers of Sweden at the height of the Scandinavian Modernist movement, during the middle decades of the 1900’s. An exceptional piece, this comely vintage rug was designed by the noted Barbro Nilsson, one of the most celebrated figures from the Scandinavian Modernist movement, and an erstwhile contributor to the famed atelier of Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom, the godmother of Swedish carpets and one of the most influential figures of the entire Mid-Century design scene. Characterized by an asymmetrical composition that heavily utilizes autumn tones, this rug is infused with a great deal of energy, and keeps the eye constantly moving, from one detail to the next. Small honeycomb-esque and floral elements appear throughout the piece in clusters in irregular intervals, adding to the implicit arboreal scene without overemphasizing it. Serrated patched of orange and brown interlock as pieces from a puzzle, effortlessly joining together in the relative chaos of the asymmetrical field. The entire composition is framed by a thin grey border, also serrated, which runs the length of the perimeter in each direction. This serves to lock the carpet in place, somewhat arresting its dynamic nature, freezing into place. The signature for the Marta Maas Fjetterstrom atelier finishes the piece in the lower left corner. It is in excellent condition with no repair or restoration (therefore it could take daily traffic and use with no problem).
