Antique Northwest Persian Runner, late nineteenth century
A classical Ottoman Turkish design of serrated leaves arranged as superimposed rows in horizontal zig-zag formation repeats against the deep blue ground down the length of this lavish antique Northwest Persian runner. The S-shaped vinescroll border, also of classical Turkish derivation, is set against a warm soft cocoa ground that contrasts beautifully with the field. Its spiraling contours also echo the volutes details within the rows of serrated leaves, providing a subtle unifying touch to the whole composition.
