Semi-Antique Boujad Rug from the Atlas Mountain region, Morocco, circa 1940 The borderless field of this striking Moroccan Boujad consists primarily of stepped diagonal stripes and checkers in red, black, gold, and ivory, all derived from the traditional Berber repertoire. But the ultimate effect resides in the free spontaneous drawing, which gives the overall design a swaying, elastic effect reminiscent of 60's 'Op Art.' The use of two green checkers at the center and three red diamonds at the bottom, however, demonstrates the conscious desire of the weaver to go for the unexpected.
