Antique Kurdish Persian Carpet, dated to 1872 While design of the field and border of this exquisitely patterned antique carpet are classically East Caucasian, the weave and coloration clearly disclose its Kurdish origin. The field has a network of tiny forms in green terracotta and gold, all configured as an octagon repeat pattern. The border is the classic 'crab' design, a geometricized double vinescroll, on a natural camel ground. The rich, saturated colors are typically Kurdish, and here they add a distinctive touch to the borrowed Caucasian design. The Islamic date of 1287 in the upper right corner translates approximately to 1872. |
