| Antique Kazak, Caucasus, late nineteenth century - Among rugs of the Caucasus region, antique Kazaks are especially prized for their large-scale, graphic designs and superior colors, and this example is outstanding by all these standards. Most of the vibrant red field is occupied by grand medallions in ivory and blue filled with stylized patterns. A highly abstract serrated leaf border on sky blue frames the field along with two more reciprocal minor borders. The whole rug pulsates with dynamic life and color. A masterpiece of village weaving. |
