Among tribal weavers, Afshars are famed for their ability to appoximate the very different patterns and sensibilities of city rug design, as this stunning example demonstrates so well. A lovely array of classical Persian palmettes and arabesques in terracottas and saffron unfolds across the navy ground of an oblong hexagonal medallion. The shape of medallion itself, along with the diamond striated field and rosette vinescroll border, is traditionally Afshar and tribal in style, but these elements blend beautifully with the classical arabesques and palmettes. The rich array colors - various blues, saffron, terracotta and ivory - brings out the power and beauty of the design.
