Buying Antique Rugs

New York Rug Dealer
New York Rug Dealer

We have a few tips to make the process easy, and enjoyable. If at all possible, start the design of a room by first finding the perfect antique rug. There are many fabric swatches that will complement any fabulous rug but while not impossible, it is more restricting to find rugs that you love that will work with fabrics.

To begin the adventure of buying antique rugs two things must be established before we have fun. We need to know size, and you need to establish a budget. Measure your room; determine the minimum and maximum size you can use. Determine the use of the room. Are your purposes and / or aesthetic sense served better by one large rug, or several smaller rugs?

Once you have determined the size and budget, the adventure of finding the right rug for you can begin. If you have already picked a color scheme, or are buying a rug for an already furnished room, make sure you bring swatches with you.

Once you have selected a rug, or  rugs, most reputable dealers are happy to have you view the rug in your home, before finalizing the sale. Usually the moment you see the rug in your space, you will know if it is the right one for you.

The end product, the purchase, should be as enjoyable, educational and fulfilling as the search itself.

Stick to Your Criteria; Love What You Buy…

Written by Joan Guryan

Twenty years ago, when I first became interested in antique rugs, I was spending my summers in a small rural town in Vermont. I was definitely a novice, though I thought I knew a little more than I did. One of the major events of the weekend was the local auction, at the firehouse.

You always arrived at these auctions early, to preview the auction items, and catch up on the local gossip. You could fine anything from farm implements to fine china. So, occasionally there were antique rugs. While very often these were American antique, such as hook rugs, sometimes there were antique Persian rugs.

One particular auction day, my husband and I arrived early; as we looked around I spotted what I thought was a Sarouk. The rug, though beautiful, with rich blues and reds, did not meet my criteria for buying it. Simply put, I did not love it. Being a novice, I was not sure of it’s value. I was swept away by the excitement of bidding on something I thought might be a treasure. Someone else thought so also. I was approached by a gentleman, who sensed my interest. He asked me if I was interested in becoming his partner on thisrug . I decided that half the investment on something I was unsure of was better than 100%. In hind sight, he probably just wanted me out of the picture, so I would not drive the price up.

Well the gentleman and I bought the rug very cheaply; no one else was bidding seriously on it. We went back to my home to settle up. When I looked the rug over carefully, I decided that not only did I not like it for myself, but it was not such a prize. So I was happy to have Ali buy me out.

I learned a valuable lesson. Stick to my criteria; buy only what I love, from someone I trust. Also, continue search for knowledge about antique rugs.

Op/Ed – Oriental Rugs Vs. The Real-Estate Market

The real-estate bubble and oriental rugs. What do the two have in common, if anything?
It has recently come to my attention that there is a correlation between the real-estate market and oriental rugs. Since home owners are not looking long term when they invest in a home, their buying patterns are changing.

The days of decorating homes with accessories that are difficult to transport are gone. Today home owners want to turn over their investment in a matter of two to three years, as opposed to twenty to thirty years.

Therefore, installing expensive wall to wall decorative broadloom carpet throughout an entire house is being replaced by Oriental rugs. Instead of leaving your new beautiful carpet behind, home owners can simply roll up an oriental rug and move it with the rest of the furniture.

In addition, these rugs can be used for multiple purposes. From wall coverings to floor coverings, prayer rugs to saddle rugs and so forth. From the living room to the dining room, and even from indoor to outdoor. Oriental rugs are experiencing a rebirth of sorts. An artform and occupation thousands of years old still useful to our modern techno-savvy lifestyles. Its not surprising that individual pieces themselves have stood the test of time and have survived intact for hundreds of years.

In conclusion, we can see the circle complete itself as something which was once considered old is not new.
