Kilim, Persia, Early 20th Century – Purely modern, this traditional Mazandaran kilim represents the best features of this beloved, recently discovered handcraft that has been decorating homes in northern Persia for more than a century. Ancient stripes, a familiar weaving and decorating motif, are rendered in an exceptionally modern selection of rosy scarlet red, vermilion, violet and motley graphite grays. Boldly colored side panels with heavy high-chroma colors and diminutive white accents create a split focal point that steals the eye away from the gentler, more softly colored centerpiece. These sleek minimalist panels are woven in a winsome, rampantly creative manner as the weaver changes colors, running dark grays, light ashen tones and unexpected vermilion stripes in a random manner and separating each with a band of clear white that provides variety and consistency.
