Antique Persian Heriz Serapi Carpet, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1900 – Here is a magnificent antique rug – an antique Heriz Serapi rug, woven in Persia toward the end of the nineteenth century. Resplendent with all of the hallmarks of the finest Heriz Serapi and Bakshaish carpets, this enticing composition delights at every turn, from its richly decorated border, to its exceptional corner pieces, to its remarkable monumental medallion. Beginning at the outermost border and working inward, we are gradually introduced to a particularly beautifully designed Persian carpet. First, a pair of outer borders set the tone for the entire piece, with each boasting an incredibly complex design despite the relative small area that they occupy. Naturally, the primary border, which comes next, is even more intricate, with incredible detail work rendered in shades of reds, yellows, and pale blues set against a deep blue tone. Two further inner borders separate this primary border from the field, wherein a great amount of action unfolds. Elaborate corner pieces of red, rich with vine scrolls, sit beautifully against the ephemeral, pale blue of the field. However, the field itself does not get much of a chance to articulate itself, as the monumental central medallion that dominates the piece is on such a grand scale. Bright and red and riddled with impeccably wrought detail work, it is this grand medallion that defines this piece. Prized by collectors the world over, antique Serapi Heriz rugs such as this exceptional piece are truly remarkable antique carpets.
