Antique Persian Sarouk Mehajeran Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa date: Early 20th Century – Antique Mehajerans are in a class apart from other Sarouks by virtue of their more open designs and their richer, more varied palette.  On this lush example stylized sprays of flowering plants and shrubs and classical Persian palmette motifs in ivory and various shades of blue sprawl across a soft, especially clear red field. These forms are rearranged to produce a vinescroll main border where they are set against a deep blue ground to frame the field emphatically. The plush velvety pile for which Sarouks are famed underscores the air of luxury achieved by the design.
