Large Antique Khotan Rug 44865

Size: 13 ft x 16 ft 6 in (3.96 m x 5.03 m)

Epitomizing the cosmopolitan style of Khotan, this antique rug displays a highly sophisticated hexagonal repeating pattern surrounded by lavish multi-part borders.

Khotan Rug, East Turkestan, Circa 1880 – This oversized antique Khotan carpet from the exotic lands of East Turkestan displays an exquisite hexagonal latticework repeating pattern enveloped by outstanding six-part borders. Wide borders featuring fretwork scrolls, polychrome sunrays, ruyi clouds, fretwork devices and floral corsages balance the grand proportions of the neutral-tone field. The expansive field displays a large-scale repeating pattern of hexagonal honeycomb compartments filled with circular medallions bound by pearly borders and filled with botanical figures that have an arthropodan appearance. The stark simplicity of the constant repeating pattern is augmented by creative variations and details, including the arthropodan legs that give each strapwork band a feathery ikat effect. Like other carpets from East Turkestan, this palatial example exhibits Khotan’s unique style, which was built on the interchange of ideas along the Silk Road.
