Ivory Tribal Geometric Rare Antique Room Size Khotan Area Rug 42559

Size: 9 ft x 12 ft 2 in (2.74 m x 3.71 m)

The field of this magnificent antique Khotan is based on the classic ‘Small Pattern Holbein’ design of the early Ottoman period.

Antique Khotan Rug, Origin: East Turkestan, Circa: 1900 – This absolutely magnificent antique rug — a Khotan rug from East Turkestan made sometime around the turn of the twentieth century — is characterized by its gorgeous, traditional field. The intricate design work woven throughout the field is based on the classic ‘Small Pattern Holbein’ design, which was very widely used on Turkish rugs from the early years of the Ottoman period. In this particular rug, larger stylized arabesque medallions alternate in staggered arrangement with smaller knotwork medallions. The hooked vine scroll design of this rug’s impressive border also derives from the pages of the Ottoman rug repertory, but this rug is far from being a totally “Ottoman” piece in design — its cool palette of tans, gold, and teal is pure Khotan. All of these elements combine to create a truly wonderful decorative piece.
