Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug, Country Of Origin: Caucasus, Circa Date: Late 19th century – This delightful antique Kazak rug showcases a host of rectilinear tribal symbols that embody the vivacious spirit of weavers in the mountains and remote valleys of Caucasia. This beautifully executed, highly unusual composition features a towering pillar of serrated medallions and alternating octagonal guls buttressed by bracketed parentheses that are filled with rectilinear garlands. This rare, wonderfully detailed stacked medallion is accompanied by a marvelous variety of traditional tribal symbols that encompass the region’s symbolic repertoire. Burdocks, scorpions, S-hooks and rosettes dot the inky black field along with charming herd animals. The exuberant field designs and strong colors are juxtaposed against crisp white guardbands, which are filled with reciprocating polychrome leaves, and iconic eagle’s head main borders that display a beautiful compound arrangement synonymous with Kazak designs.
