Antique Caucasian rugs and carpets – and especially antique Karabagh rugs and carpets – are among the most widely admired of all antique Oriental rugs. These captivating compositions are celebrated for their unique and authentic tribal aesthetic qualities, which emphasize the geometric and the rectilinear mores so than other styles. Among the multiplicity of antique rug types produced in the Caucasus in the nineteenth century, Karabaghs like this are the ones that come closest to Persian village rug traditions to the south. Here small, elaborately stylized palmettes of several types are arranged in staggered repetition down the length of the field. The borders are narrow with the main one echoing the field color and the flanking minor borders setting it off in contrast. Despite the Persian aspect of the design, he palette of light green, and terracotta shades set dramatically against black ground is distinctively Karabagh.
