Antique Sultanabad Persian Sampler Rug 44661
Sultanabad Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century - Leafy vines and flowers in exquisitely soft shades of terracotta, gold, and blue make up this charming antique Sultanabad sampler or 'wagireh,' used to generate the complete pattern or matrix for a room-sized carpet. One quarter of a central petalled medallion appears at the lower right, while the various vines and leaves may be repeated to produce a larger design. Here narrow border would become a minor border on the larger carpet. Though asymmetrical and partial, this wagireh nonetheless makes a lovely little rug on its own.
