Antique Shahsevan Long Rug, Caucasus, circa 1870 - This spectacular example has the unusual design, spontaneous drawing, and rich color that sets it apart from Kazaks or Karabaghs. A series of large diamond latch hook medallions repeats down the field, each enclosed in a compartment of different color. Inner stepped medallions with linear embellishment fill the diamonds, whose interior coloration varies as well. The remainder of each compartment has a varied array of space fillers. An exciting border of hooked elements, simplified trees, and diamond rosettes is set against red ground that firmly frames and anchors the dynamic composition of the field, with one last outer wine-glass border on an ivory ground as the final touch.
