In effect, each rectangular area within the grid is its own little carpet design, with a central medallion and four cornerpieces, so that the design represents a multiplicity of designs within a larger framework. Multiple borders frame the field in classic Khotan style, with an outer main border of cruciform rosettes, and various others repeating this patterning on a smaller scale.
